Wholistic Beginnings Gestational Diabetes Interview Parts 3 and 4

The last few months have been quite a whirlwind!

I’m in the final stages of editing my book, Real Food for Gestational Diabetes, only 4 months after I typed the first word. I still can’t believe it, but it just goes to show what can be accomplished when you follow your passion!

[UPDATE: Real Food for Gestational Diabetes is now available for purchase!]

A few weeks ago I shared an interview I did with Los Angeles-based doula, Andrea Abenoza-Filardi from Wholistic Beginnings.

Today we’re back with the Wholistic Beginnings Gestational Diabetes Interview Parts 3 and 4!

If you missed Parts 1 and 2 of this series, check ’em out here.

Part 3

In part 3 of the Wholistic Beginnings Gestational Diabetes Interview, I cover:

  • What to do first when you’re diagnosed with gestational diabetes (it’s actually not changing the way you eat or exercising).
  • Why getting diagnosed with gestational diabetes isn’t the worst thing in the world (and is actually very common).
  • Why gestational diabetes is a blessing in disguise, but don’t just take my word for it!
  • How controlling your blood sugar is easier than you think.
  • When to test your blood sugar and why this information is so important.
  • What can raise your blood sugar other than food.
  • How the risk of a big baby is linked to more than just blood sugar and what you can do to reduce the risk.

Part 4

In part 4 of the Wholistic Beginnings Gestational Diabetes Interview, I talk all about exercise during pregnancy, including:

  • How much exercise is recommended during pregnancy?
  • How I feel about weight lifting in pregnancy, including heavy weights. (By the way, resistance exercise is great during pregnancy. Here are 5 moves to try.)
  • Why you need to protect your joints (I’m lookin’ at you, weight lifters and yoginis!).
  • How regular exercise can reduce the risk of gestational diabetes (the statistics will shock you!).
  • Belly dancing and how it impacts labor (you have to hear Andrea’s thoughts on this!).
  • How long you should wait after giving birth to resume exercising.
  • Why Pilates is fantastic for women during pregnancy and postpartum (I’ve written about how Pilates is safe during pregnancy before).
  • How women’s physical therapy can help postpartum (and why I wish all women had access to this).
  • The simple exercise you can do to protect from low back pain (and keep good posture)

Enjoy and please share with any expecting moms you know!

By the way, if you didn’t get a chance to watch the Wholistic Beginnings Gestational Diabetes Interview Parts 1 and 2, you can access them right here.

Until next week,
Lily

  1. Thanks Lily for the shout out on the benefits of women’s health physical therapy and the benefits of postpartum care! I also think all women should have a PT evaluation postpartum so we can learn how our new bodies should be working!
